“Emergency measures are no longer enough,” warns the Chamber of Commerce

With business confidence having fallen to an all-time low, the Chamber of Commerce believes that Luxembourg can no longer make do with short-term support measures. It is calling on the government to speed up structural reforms in order to restore the country’s competitiveness in the long term.

On 30 June, the Chamber of Commerce presented the 15th edition of its Economic Barometer. Conducted between 13 April and 15 May amongst 621 businesses, the survey reflects, according to its managing director Carlo Thelen, a growing sense of unease in the business world. The business climate index has fallen to 49.4 points, a level barely higher than that seen during the health crisis. And whilst 73% of businesses remain confident about their own future, this sentiment contrasts with their perception of the Luxembourg economy. Only 58% still say they are confident about the country’s prospects, the lowest level since the Barometer was launched in 2019. Over the past six years, this confidence has fallen by around 30 points.
