Luxembourg’s labour market is ageing. Between 2009 and 2025, the average age of all employees rose from 38.7 to 41, increasing by 2.3 years. A moderate phenomenon on a European scale, but exacerbated by the accelerated ageing of cross-border workers.
While, in 2024, the resident population in employment in Luxembourg (40.4 years old) remains younger than that of its neighbours (Germany 42.4 years old, France 41.7 years old), an analysis of the salaried workforce as a whole (residents and cross-border commuters) reveals a clear trend towards ageing.
