Economic Mission to the Republic of South Africa

The Chamber of Commerce of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg will organize a multisectoral economic mission to South Africa from the 24th to 28th of June 2013. The objective of this trade mission to South Africa is to promote and strengthen the commercial and economic ties between South Africa and Luxembourg. The mission will start in Johannesburg on 25th of June, continue to Cape Town on 26th and 27th of June before ending in Durban on 28th of June.

South Africa is the largest economy on the African continent and is ranked by the World Bank as a middle-income, emerging market. South Africa is more than an abundant supplier of natural resources. Its economy is reasonably diversified with well-developed financial, legal, communications, energy, and transport sectors. Modern infrastructure is supporting an efficient distribution of goods to major urban centers throughout the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Growth was robust from 2004 to 2007 as South Africa reaped the benefits of macroeconomic stability and a global commodities boom but began to slow in the second half of 2007 due to an electricity crisis and the subsequent global financial crisis' impact on commodity prices and demand. GDP fell nearly 2% in 2009 but recovered in 2010-12 and the economy grew again at 3,1% in 2011 and at 2,5% in 2012 according to official data released last week. On top, the non-double taxation agreement between South Africa and Luxembourg, in force since the year 2000, offers numerous advantages for trade and investments between the two countries.

The goal of the mission is twofold: to promote Luxembourg as a hub for South African company’s activities in the European market and to enhance close cooperation in various sectors of activities such as satellite communication & information technology, finance, steel industry & manufacturing and trading. B2B meetings as well as sectoral round-table discussions can be arranged for Luxembourg participants at the three destinations.
