Industry 4.0 offers strong opportunities for productivity and growth. The exchange of information in real time among participants of the value chain from product planning, to design, manufacturing, maintenance and even refurbishment will dramatically increase flexibility and speed in handling planned and unplanned product changes. In its most extreme form, this flexibility and speed will allow to manufacture fully customised products at the cost level of mass production, potentially enabling the manufacturing industry in high salary countries to recapture a considerable competitive advantage.
