What is the Withdrawal Agreement about?
On 14 November 2018, the European Commission recommended to the European Council (Article 50) to conclude that decisive progress has been made in the negotiations on the orderly withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, allowing the negotiations on the withdrawal agreement to be concluded and the next step of the process to be initiated. The negotiators have also agreed on an outline of the political declaration on the future EU-UK relationship.
On Sunday 25 November 2018, EU 27 leaders met for special meeting of the European Council. During this meeting, the European Council (EU 27) officially endorsed the Brexit withdrawal agreement, as presented by the negotiators of the EU and the UK. They also approved the political declaration on future EU-UK relations, which accompanies and is referred to in the withdrawal agreement.
On this basis, the European Council invited the Commission, the European Parliament and the Council to take the necessary steps to ensure that the agreement can enter into force on 30th March 2019, so as to provide for an orderly withdrawal.
